Computers!! <shakes fist>

The heading doesn’t do it justice. I lost several hours to computer problems this week. Most specifically on my work iMac I installed the latest update from the App Store for OS X and like the last time I tried to install the update, it effectively bricked the machine never fully starting back up and reaching the login screen. Last time took an hour or so to fix and this time was even worse. It seems to stem from the delta updates in the App Store have some kind of issue which causes it not be able to install them fully during the boot.

Most ironically the diagnostic mode (pressing D when powering up the mac) got nowhere. Immediately on entering the diagnostic mode, it would reset. 🙄

I eventually got back up and running after managing to reset NVRAM and then I was able to boot into safe mode (holding Shift on power up). From there I downloaded and installed the latest combo update from Apple.

A week in Stoicism

Wanting less increases gratitude just as wanting more obliterates it. Reduce the destructive habits of wanting more, more, more and practice being grateful for what you already have.

“Remember to conduct yourself in life as if at a banquet. As something being passed around comes to you, reach out your hand and take a moderate helping. Does it pass you by? Don’t stop it. It hasn’t come yet? Don’t burn in desire for it, but wait until it arrives in front of you. Act this way with children, a spouse, toward position, with wealth - one day it will make you worthy of a banquet with the gods.” Epictetus
